The cultural offerings at Stanford are outstanding.
The Cantor Arts Center is an impressive art museum that opened in 1894. The collection of Rodin bronzes is one of the largest outside of Paris, and the museum’s historic art collection spans thousands of years.
There are several theatre and musical groups on campus, and the university’s departments of drama and music put on productions throughout the year. Lectures, movies and art exhibits are also available to attend on a regular basis. The university offers attendance to many events at no cost to the general public.
Stanford sponsors NCAA Division I athletics and is in fact the best athletics department in the country. The university has won the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup every year since the 1994-95 school year. There are 37 varsity teams, and the most popular ones are the football and men’s basketball squads. The football team plays in the 50,000-seat Stanford Stadium, and the men’s and women’s basketball teams call 7,329-seat Maples Pavilion home.

The annual football game between the rivals is one of the premier events in the Bay Area every year. Stanford plays host to the game in October or November of every odd year.
Stanford Stadium is also historic as a setting for non-collegiate sports events. Super Bowl XIX was held here in 1985. The San Francisco 49ers, playing just 30 miles south of their home stadium, defeated the Miami Dolphins, 38-16. Soccer matches at the 1984 Summer Olympics, the 1994 World Cup and the 1999 Women’s World Cup were also played here.
Simply taking a walk through the beautiful campus will surely be a memorable experience. Take in the Quad, the amazing fountains, the Rodin sculptures, the lush grass and the beautiful flowers. Allow yourself to be immersed into the culture and all of the great minds that have been here since the university was founded in 1891.
Hoover Tower is a perfect place to view the campus from an elevation of 250 feet. About 200 people a day enjoy the expansive views available here. The tower is open to visitors for a nominal fee on a daily basis with the exception of academic breaks and finals.
