Vineyards and Wineries in Silicon Valley – Mountain Winery in Saratoga

While staying at Camino Inn and Suites, we highly recommend a pleasurable visit to the renowned Mountain Winery in Saratoga. This distinguished winery became famous with the TV slogan by Orson Welles, “We will sell no wine before its time.” Today, the winery is a California Historical Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places.

Paul Masson, a French expatriate, built the Mountain Winery in 1905. Born into a family of well-established winemakers, Masson perfected the technique of grafting and became world-famous for his Paul Masson Champagne of California. With a label of his own, he finally decided to open his own winery and chose the beautiful town of Saratoga for its location. Adding a 12th century Spanish portal from the old St. Patrick’s Cathedral in San Jose to the chateau quickly became the hallmark of his distinct vineyard.

Set in the idyllic rolling hills of Silicon Valley, this beautiful winery features panoramic views with redwood groves and landscaped gardens encircling its terrace. In old world ambiance, guests can meander the grounds while delighting the palate with its fine wines.

Dedicated to the history and art of wine tasting, the Mountain Winery offers a wine tasting class for its guests. This fun and educational class teaches the four-step approach of wine tasting. Learn to see, sniff, sip and sense just like the sommeliers do. In blind-tasting activities, you’ll learn how to identify your favorite wines.

Live entertainment has always been a big part of the Mountain Winery. In the past, the Mountain Winery has hosted concerts with many starred musicians, including Ringo Star, Ray Charles, Carlos Santana and Stevie Wonder. The winery has an intimate 2500 seat amphitheater set up with the dramatic backdrop of its Spanish-styled building. Every summer, the winery features concerts with famed musicians. With fine wine, world-class music and magnificent scenery of the valley, its concerts are always a crowd pleaser.
